I’ve been having fun the last couple of days playing around with scraps of my hand-dyed fabrics to make woven hearts. It’s really simple and is a great way to use up scraps of fabric.

First, I applied some double-sided transfer web to the back side of two small pieces of fabric. I used Steam-a-Seam 2 because that’s what I had, but other things like heat-and-bond or wonder-under would also work. Steam- a-Seam is nice because it’s slightly sticky and can be repositioned until it’s permanently bonded. After applying this, I cut both squares together so that they were the same size (mine are around 4″):

Next, I cut each square with wavy lines, one vertically and one horizontally. Here’s some pictures of that:

Next, I began weaving the pieces together. I worked on the piece of transfer paper I’d removed when I applied it to the fabric backs. Here’s step one:

I continued adding strips, alternating between horizontal and vertical pieces until all of my strips were used up. The finished squares looked like this (and yes, there should be one more strip on the bottom of the yellow/orange square, but my puppy ate it while I was working on it :) ):

At this point, I ironed the pieces so they would be permanently bonded together. I did this with the transfer paper remaining on the back so that I can bond the finished heart to something else.
I then made a paper template with a heart cut out of it so that I could view the part of the weaving I wanted to cut out:

I traced inside my heart template and cut out my woven hearts. I now plan to use them as appliques and layer them with some other fabrics to make some kind of cards.

I’m still playing with that part and also with several other fabrics. I’ll try to remember to post some of my final results later!
